Have you ever planned on travelling to a fair or exhibition only to find out that hotels are either fully booked or rates are skyrocketing high?

Having seen both sides, as hotel staff and visitor, I can tell you it’s a nightmare.

The solution? Booking a hotel that is still in convenient distance, but outside the city where the fair/exhibition is held. Chances are way better to get a room and for a better price.

Cologne and Dusseldorf are two major hubs in Germany when it comes to events of all kinds, nearly year-round. Especially the months between September and May are known to be constantly filled with lots of international top fairs such as the Photokina, Boot Messe, Caravan Salon, Anuga, and Gamescom. But hotels are constantly filled, often booked out weeks in advance plus super high hotel rates.

Enter the city of Langenfeld. Langenfeld (btw, it’s the town where Kian grew up) sits between Cologne and Dusseldorf as well adjacent to Leverkusen, a city known for one of Germany’s best football clubs (Bayer Leverkusen) and the headquarter of Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The city is an attractive place for budget conscious business travellers yet being centrally located. Its train station serves Cologne and Dusseldorf (about 30 min), Leverkusen (10 min) and even the city of Essen (90 min).

Among the city’s dozen hotels comes one that combines everything: train station and city centre in walking distance, restaurants, eateries and shopping options around and of course, nice rooms and great service – Hotel Am Berliner Platz (translates to Hotel at Berlin Square). The hotel opened with just a few rooms in fall 2008 and was able to expand quickly over the past years. Due to constantly maintaining high guest satisfaction, Hotel Am Berliner Platz is currently the highest rated hotel in Langenfeld on Booking.com and HRS. The hotel’s director and owner, Kristijan Beslic, is a passionate hotelier who knows how to welcome and treat his guests.

Hotel Am Berliner Platz features currently 15 rooms (soon 18) and offers all amenities of a modern city hotel, including desk, flat screen TV, minibar, comfy and large beds, oversized bathrooms and free wifi. In addition, the hotel’s restaurant opens in the morning and offers its guests a delicious continental breakfast buffet, along with coffee and hot egg dishes. The rooms are tastefully decorated in warm colours, creating a soothing and relaxing atmosphere, which is especially great after a long day of work.

You can also see lots of paintings throughout the hotel from Kristijan’ twin brother Ivan (@artisbullshit), who is a renowned artist and runs an art gallery. A traditional German pub as well a Thai/Chinese restaurant are located on the ground floor next to the entrance. An Aldi- supermarket is located on the opposite, in case you need any groceries, beverages, snacks, soap, shampoo, etc. And if you’re looking for some workout, just leave the hotel to your left and run along the sidewalk – a great path, flat, straight and almost no pedestrians.

All in all, Hotel Am Berliner Platz is a great choice if you’re looking for a hotel near Cologne or Dusseldorf. The service is fantastic, the facilities are superb and the location is just great!
